Title: Systems Manager
Department: Information Services
Function:
Acts as system administrator for the university's OpenVMS and Unix
computer systems and for other computing platforms; is responsible
for the continuous delivery of computer services to the university
community and the integration of university computers with Internet
services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for configuration and operation of the various
computer systems and their network connections;
- Sets up and maintains user accounts and access permissions;
- Performs backup and recovery procedures for disk files and
other procedures to insure integrity of data;
- Monitors the system for hardware and software failures in
order to initiate or recommend corrective response;
- Analyzes and trouble-shoots problems with system operation;
- Installs software upgrades and layered products;
- Monitors system operation and disk usage, and adjusts system
parameters and balances loads, as necessary and where possible to
maintain or improve system performance and response;
- Maintains command procedures, shell scripts, and job queues in
support of continued system operation, maintenance, and security;
- Makes recommendations for system improvements;
- Designs, maintains, and supervises use of procedures related
to system administration, operation, and backup to be performed by
other Information Services personnel;
- Provides continuing support to the user community in the area
of basic system use and computing skills through the use of online
help and informational texts, printed instructional materials, and
contributions to the monthly newsletter;
- Acts as Internet site technical contact assigning and
allocating IP address numbers, maintaining domain name service,
and serving as site postmaster redirecting electronic mail to
proper recipients and maintaining address aliases;
- Submit technical information, or revisions thereof, to
Internic and/or ISP's;
- Coordinates web site usage, implementing policies and
procedures defined by the university web committee.
Qualifications:
Master's degree in computer science, MIS, or related fields;
experience with DEC VMS and Unix systems, DOS, Windows, Windows NT,
Mac OS, Netware, and TCP/IP. Should be skilled in the use of SQL and
other relational database tools, DEC system tools, C/S middleware,
and MS Office applications.
