The Sisters of Mercy and Saint Xavier University:Tradition and Transition |
||
|
The religious order of the Sisters of Mercy and Saint Xavier University in Chicago, Illinois, are bound together by history and mission. This online exhibit honors the 160-year old relationship between the Sisters and the University. The exhibit reflects upon the mutual traditions and transitions as we celebrate Mercy Week. At the same time, the University welcomes its new president, Dr. Judith A. Dwyer, and the completion of the new Orland Park campus. This exhibit provides a brief history of the Sisters of Mercy and Saint Xavier from their origins to the establishment of the "new" campus on 103rd Street. The exhibit cannot begin to tell the whole story. Interested persons should consult Sister Joy Clough's First in Chicago: A History of Saint Xavier University. Other images used in the exhibit came from the Archives in Byrne Memorial Library and the Archives of the Sisters of Mercy. Special thanks are due to Sister M. Joella Cunnane, RSM, for her asistance. The exhibit was created by Mark Vargas, Director of Byrne Memorial Library, who is solely responsible for its content. |
